Intermountain Health Expands StepWatch® Program After Two-Year Pilot Shows Measurable Gains in Patient Walking Speed and Balance

Only StepWatch Could Reliably Track Patients’ Walking; Program Grows from One to Five Clinics Across Utah and Colorado

Mountlake Terrace, WA (USA) — August 8, 2025 — Modus Health LLC, the developer of the research-grade StepWatch® Activity Monitor and Clinical Care software, announced today that Intermountain Health will expand its high-intensity walking training program using StepWatch from one facility to five clinics across Utah and Colorado.

The decision follows the success of a two-year pilot at Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital, where StepWatch was used to measure patient walking during rehabilitation.

During the pilot, Intermountain caregivers evaluated multiple wearable activity monitors to guide high-intensity gait training, aiming for patients to walk at 70–85% of their maximum heart rate.

StepWatch, paired with Modus Health’s Clinical Care software, provided clinicians with precise, real-time step data, enabling them to increase patient walking intensity safely and effectively.

The results were clear: patients who took more steps at high intensity showed strong correlations to improved walking speed and better balance.

Encouraged by these outcomes — and by positive feedback from its clinical teams — Intermountain will now expand the program to include both inpatient and outpatient care.

“We are excited to continue our work with Intermountain Health in improving patient outcomes,” said Teri Chou, CEO of Modus Health LLC. “They are pioneering the implementation of digital health for improved patient quality of life. The expansion from one to five clinics will also allow us to explore additional benefits such as reduced falls and reduced healthcare costs. The scientific literature around increasing walking with StepWatch has shown a reduction in length of stay and readmissions. We look forward to gaining insights with this expansion.”

“We’re looking forward to expanding use of StepWatch within our high-intensity training program to benefit our patients,” said Nancy Christensen Mayer, senior director for inpatient rehabilitation for Intermountain Health. “Our goal is always to to improve patient outcomes and help our patients live their healthiest lives possible.”

StepWatch® is a clinically validated, research-grade wearable that delivers highly accurate step count data in real-world settings — even for patients with slow or irregular gait. Combined with Modus Health’s Clinical Care software, it enables care teams to set personalized walking goals, monitor progress, and integrate activity data into rehabilitation programs.
